Ymro Reigel

Team Leader Shredder Amsterdam

“Earning your place and growing together”

In 2020, I made the move to HKS Amsterdam to start a new career. I began in the non-ferrous department – a choice that turned out to be perfect in hindsight. You learn everything there: working with machines, material knowledge, pricing, customer contact. It's truly a learning experience.

From the outset, I wanted to understand what was happening around me. I asked a lot of questions, worked in different departments within the facility, and ensured I could talk about everything. By being eager to learn and sticking my neck out, I was given the opportunity in 2023 to become the shredder team leader. I grabbed that challenge with both hands.

New people, a new project (TSR40) and more responsibility – that’s how the next phase began for me. Later, I even got to be deputy site manager. That brought me new knowledge about administration and the entire chain within the branch.

What characterises HKS for me is the culture. You have to earn your place. Nothing comes easily. But if you work hard, show initiative and help each other, then you naturally grow with the team.

My personal growth in one sentence? I don’t grow as an individual, but we do grow as a group.

Joyce Lam

Administrative Assistant
Weighbridge, Amsterdam

“Learning by doing”

I started at HKS as a weighbridge operator. I'm now mainly involved in central administration and work on various administrative projects. My growth has really happened step by step. Due to changes within the team, I got the opportunity to take on more responsibility. I started asking questions, took on new tasks, and thereby found more and more challenge in my work.

What makes HKS special for me is the culture. Colleagues genuinely help you and think things through with you. I've felt supported by the people around me from the very beginning. We brainstorm a lot together about how things can be improved and how I can develop further. I also regularly receive compliments from colleagues I don't even directly work with – that makes you feel seen and valued.

At HKS, you are given the space and trust to grow. If you show initiative and want to develop yourself, this is genuinely encouraged here.

If I have to summarise my growth in one sentence: anything is possible.

Mario Geertsema

Site Manager Hengelo

“Continue building yourself and the branch”

When I started at HKS in 2011 as a crane operator, my focus was mainly on the work on site. I had experience and managed well. I couldn't have imagined back then that so much more would come of it later on.

Through my involvement in health and safety, ISO and, later, the works council, my interest in the company itself grew. I realised that my input was taken seriously and that my manager had confidence in me — sometimes even more than I had in myself. That gave me the push I needed to look beyond my own role. Thanks to the leadership training and courses offered to me by HKS, I was able to develop in my new role. In 2018, I became a site manager.

What keeps me at HKS is the culture. It’s not your typical ‘scrapyard culture’. There’s scope for innovation, for taking the initiative and for contributing ideas about the future of the site. If you want to learn and take on responsibility, you’ll be given that opportunity here.

Looking back, I have achieved things I couldn't have imagined beforehand. And that's precisely what motivates me to keep growing and to make our branch better together.
