CO2 Performance Ladder
HKS Metals represents sustainability. We are the gateway to the circular economy for both the Netherlands and the world.
By optimising operational processes, we aim to recycle metals to the greatest possible extent so as to minimise the required energy consumption and corresponding CO2 emissions. We fully focus on social and environmental aspects, which is emphasised by our CSR 4 certificate.
CO2 emissions at HKS
HKS assumes responsibility for its energy consumption. Most of our CO2 footprint is caused by the consumption of electricity (scope 2) for our manufacturing resources and the consumption of diesel (scope 1) for our rolling stock. We are doing something about this.
By 2019, we want to have achieved the following compared to 2015:
- An even higher recycling percentage of the input materials, enabling us to recover more metals and residual materials, which should reduce demand for new minerals
- Reducing the consumption of electricity and diesel per MT in order to reduce CO2 emissions by 0.25% per MT
- Smarter & more economical use of our fleet
- Paperless office in combination with a conscious office and living environment
CO2 Performance Ladder
Within the framework of certification on the CO2 Performance Ladder, HKS Metals BV prepares a CO₂ footprint of its activities every half year. This footprint provides an insight into the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted. This footprint serves as a departure point to reduce CO₂ emissions across the company and to monitor the effects of the measures.
Conclusion and trends
In the first half by 2017 we have been able to implement several process improvements. As a result, we have more output at equal amount of energy. In addition, we have more to make use of the existing water network. We have many kilometers away. We also have on one of our locations a revision of the entire shredder installation in motion to increase the efficiency of this shredder. These initiatives have had a positive impact on energy consumption as a whole and also on the CO2 emissions per ton of produced product.

Conclusions and trends
The carbon footprint of HKS Metals BV amounted in the first half by 2017 8,566 ton of CO2. Spread over 33% (direct emissions) scope 1 and scope 2 (indirect emissions) 67%.
Measures
HKS Metals invests in its rolling stock over time, so does the planning to 2017 in a training for staff on how to “Green Group taps”. A single faucet is exchanged to the related diesel consumption.
